Poll: Term limits
February 3, 2012 7:16PM
The U.S. Senate last week voted down a nonbinding amendment that would have led to setting term limits for House members and Senators.
Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., first elected to the Senate in 2004, has been a longtime champion of term limits, a favorite issue of Tea Party members.
“We need to limit the terms of people who come to Washington,” DeMint said. “I think we will get better government, certainly less corruption.”
Democrat Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin opposed the term-setting amendment, while Republican Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk was unable to vote because he still is hospitalized following a recent stroke.
