Romeoville clears way for future farmer’s market

ROMEOVILLE — It may be too late for this summer, but Romeoville trustees have approved an ordinance that will allow a farmer’s market to take place in the village in the future.
The village amended its zoning code of ordinances to allow a “temporary” market to be held in the village’s downtown as well as areas zoned for agricultural or public/private land conservation uses.
Community development director Steve Rockwell said that the changes to the ordinance were a result of requests for a market over the years. The changes to the code will now allow it he said.
“The village hopes one day to have an event like this, so we’re setting the code up,” said Rockwell.
Mayor John Noak cautioned that the change didn’t mean that a farmer’s market would be open for business anytime soon.
“It’s something we’ve been looking at for a number of years,” Noak said.
Trustee Sue Micklevitz said that Romeoville could look forward to its own fresh produce market, something that other towns nearby have hosted over the years.
“This is obviously a trend for a lot of communities,” said Micklevitz.
