Police Blotter: Man dies when vehicle strikes semi truck

UNIVERSITY PARK — A Plano man died after his van struck a semi-trailer Thursday.

Will County Sheriff’s police said around 2:20 p.m. Russell D. Lurz, 32, was westbound on Dralle Road when he struck the back of a truck stopped a quarter-mile east of Central Road.

Lurz was taken to Olympia Fields Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The 54-year-old truck driver, a Lombard man, was also hospitalized with chest pains, police said.

Man shot taking out trash

JOLIET — A man told police he was taking out the trash when he was shot by a mugger Sunday night.

According to reports, the 28-year-old victim went out at 8:50 p.m. in the 0 to 100 block of Mississippi Avenue when he was approached by a black man in dark clothes.

“The man demanded money and began taking his hand out of his pocket. The victim thought he was going to be punched and went to strike him away, but was shot in the hand,” Cmdr. Al Roechner said. The victim ran from the scene and was treated for a non-life-threatening injury.

Cops find gun, arrest man

JOLIET — A 24-year-old man was arrested after officers reportedly found a loaded gun in a car Saturday.

Cmdr. Brian Benton said police were on patrol at 10:37 p.m. when they found a vehicle stopped at the intersection of Henry Street and Hobbs Avenue.

“As they approached the vehicle they smelled the strong odor of cannabis from inside and found the driver had a revoked license,” Benton said. “Before being towed they (took inventory) of the vehicle and found a .22-caliber revolver behind the seat where Daniel A. Davis had been sitting.”

Davis, of 116 Davison St. in Joliet, was booked into the county jail on charges of unauthorized possession of a firearm, unauthorized possession of ammunition, cannabis possession and driving on a suspended license.

Janet A. Horbowski: 34, of 1073 Ridgewood Drive in Bolingbrook, was arrested by sheriff’s police and booked into the county jail Friday on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and driving on a suspended license.

Matthew J. Leinweber: 28, of 129 Fairway Drive in Bolingbrook, was arrested by sheriff’s police and booked into the county jail Friday on a charge of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Greg Likes: 53, of 2424 Flower St. in Joliet, was arrested by sheriff’s police and booked into the county jail Friday on a charge of driving on a suspended license.

James A. Carlton: 29, of 26108 S. 80th Ave. in Monee, was arrested by sheriff’s police and booked into the county jail Friday on a charge of possession of cannabis with intent to deliver.

Christopher D. Sullivan: 24, of 1104 Campbell St. in Joliet, and Andrew M. Zematis: 28, of 201 San Carlos Road in Minooka, were arrested by Joliet police and booked into the county jail Friday on charges of residential burglary.

Denson J. Hogan-Berry: 24, of 562 Dover St. in Joliet, was arrested by sheriff’s police and booked into the county jail Friday on a charge of driving on a suspended license.

Shakira L. Smalley: 18, of 867 Burnham Drive in University Park, was arrested by Crete police and booked into the county jail Friday on a charge of aggravated battery.

Trevale S. Shorts: 21, of 106 Nicholson St. in Joliet, was arrested by Joliet police and booked into the county jail Friday on a charge of making a false police report.

Andre P. Simpson: 47, of 6715 Hadrian Drive in Joliet, was arrested by Joliet police and booked into the county jail Saturday on charges of burglary and theft.

Jerod D. Doss: 17, of 1018 Summit St. in Joliet, was arrested by Joliet police and booked into the county jail Saturday on charges of narcotics possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

James C. Foster: 24, of 7700 W. 191st St. in Tinley Park, was arrested by Tinley Park police and booked into the county jail Saturday on a charge of cannabis possession.

Darrell L. Stuckey: 21, of 200 Madison St. in Joliet, was arrested by Joliet police and booked into the county jail Saturday on a charge of forgery.

Jonathan E. Alba: 26, of 357 Thistle Drive in Bolingbrook, was arrested by Bolingbrook police and booked into the county jail Saturday on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.
