Edward Hospital will open its southernmost health care center in Plainfield on Aug. 20.

The center at 16519 S. Route 59 will replace Edward’s existing south Plainfield location at 15905 Frederick St. The new center will be double the size. It will have three doctors, instead of two, and offer physical therapy, specialist doctors and imaging services, according to Brian Davis, the hospital’s vice president of marketing and governmental relations.

Edward’s service area stretches south to Joliet, north to Wheaton, east to Downers Grove and west to Yorkville, Davis said. While no plan exists now to build a health care center in Joliet, it is a possibility, he said.

“I couldn’t rule that out in the future because of our growth,” Davis said. “We’re always looking to expand and bring services closer to the people we serve.”

Naperville-based Edward has attempted in the past to get state approval to build a second hospital on its 60-acre medical campus near 127th Street and Route 30 in Plainfield. But those attempts have been put on hold because of the recession, Davis said.

“Right now we’re in a wait-and-see mode,” he said. “The economy, obviously, is a factor.”

But a hospital will come some day, he added.

“There is a hospital in Plainfield’s future and we’re watching the situation closely with the economy and we’re very bullish on Plainfield,” Davis said.

Edward’s Plainfield campus — which includes an emergency room, surgery center, cancer center, imaging facility and doctor’s offices — has had more than 100,000 patient visits in the past 12 months, he said.

The Plainfield Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon cutting for the new health care center on Route 59 at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 20 and an open house for the community will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Sept. 22.

The new location will feature a walk-in clinic on Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 630-646-5020.
