MORRIS — Police declared the Carmike Cinemas theater in Morris safe after it was under the threat of a bomb Friday morning.

Emergency crews responded to Carmike Cinemas movie theaters across the country after a multistate bomb threat apparently was called in to the theater chain’s headquarters Friday morning.

According to reports, Morris Assistant Police Chief Harvey Van Cleave said the threat was called in to Carmike’s office in Georgia, which relayed the message to local emergency crews around 9:30 a.m. Friday.

Police said there was a person sitting alone in a car parked in the parking lot of the Orpheum Theater, a Carmike Cinemas theater located at 515 W. Gore Road in Morris.

Authorities decided to call in the Cook County bomb unit, which sent two explosive-detecting dogs to the scene.

The dogs and their handlers searched the car in the parking lot as well as the theater, which was declared safe about noon Friday.
