Rabid bat found in Plainfield

Updated: October 21, 2012 2:27PM

JOLIET — A bat netted in the backyard of a Plainfield home was confirmed Monday as Will County’s eighth case of wildlife rabies for 2012.

A resident in the 24,000 block of Brown Lane spied the bat behind his home and observed that the animal had difficulty while attempting to fly. With the use of a net, the bat was captured and trapped in a bucket while animal control authorities were notified.

Will County Animal Control took possession of the bat and dispatched it for laboratory analysis Sept. 14. The Will County Health Department and animal control received a positive rabies confirmation from the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Three people and a dog live on the Brown Lane property, but no rabies exposures have been identified. The dog is current on its rabies vaccination schedule.

Cases earlier were reported in Plainfield, Joliet, Manhattan and Naperville.
