Thanks to a quick-thinking neighbor, a Mokena family of three and their dog escaped without injury Wednesday night when a fire damaged their home in the 11000 block of Daniel Trail.
Mokena fire investigators have ruled the fire accidental, Fire Chief Howard Stephens said.
The neighbor -- who spotted flames on the outside of the two-story home -- alerted the family, who was unaware that their house was on fire, Chief Stephens said.
“If he didn’t see the fire, who knows what could have happened,” he said. “It could have been a real problem. It’s lucky that he saw it and reacted.”
By the time firefighters arrived on the scene about 9:30 p.m., the fire had quickly spread up the side of the house and into the roof attic, Stephens said.
“The entire east side of the house was on fire,” he said.
The house was extensively damaged but no one was injured, Stephens said.
Firefighters were on the scene for an hour and were assisted by crews from New Lenox, Frankfort, Orland Park and Tinley Park.
