Updated: November 17, 2012 6:09AM

BRAIDWOOD — A heating unit caught fire in a motel room Monday morning.

Deputy Chief Scott Favero said it was 7:28 a.m. when a guest at the Sun Motel, 140 S. Hickory St., noticed smoke coming from the unit.

“He was able to get out and the fire was contained to that unit. It took about 10 minutes to put it out,” Favero said.

Coal City, Elwood and Wilmington fire departments assisted on the alarm. Favero said the room suffered a large amount of heat and smoke damage.

Man killed on highway identified

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP — The man who was fatally struck by a semi truck and a car on Interstate 55 Sunday has been identified.

Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said Monday morning deputy coroners were able to find a fingerprint record matching Ryan A. Knudsen, 22, of Plainfield.

At 5:22 a.m. a Freightliner semi-tractor was northbound when it struck the man in the right lane near milepost 3.1 north of Route 30.

“(Knudsen) jumped in front of the truck before the driver had any time to react,” according to state police reports.

The driver of a 1999 Toyota Camry traveling behind the truck and trailer did not see the pedestrian in roadway and struck him a second time.
