New Lenox school testing scores praised

NEW LENOX — New Lenox Grade School District earned top scores on it standardized tests, especially in math, Assistant Superintendent Peggy Manville told the school board recently.
Grades 3-8 were tested in reading and math. Grades 4 and 8 were also tested in science. In every area, students either met or exceeded expectations, she said.
“In a district this large, we were very, very pleased with the results,” Superintendent Michael Sass said. “It was an excellent report.”
Math showed the highest scores, with third grade leading with 94 percent. The other grades followed with sixth grade at 93 percent, eighth grade at 90 percent, fourth grade at 89 percent and seventh grade at 88 percent.
In reading, eighth grade achieved 88 percent, sixth grade had 87 percent, third and fifth grades had 85 percent and grades four and seven had 81 percent.
In science, seventh grade earned 85 percent and fourth grade had 83 percent.
Recently, the district changed textbooks to the University of Chicago School Everyday Math program. Although Manville and Sass have praised the program, Sass said the credit also goes to the right teachers who know how to use the right resources.
