JOLIET - Police say a registered sex offender broke into a woman’s house and attempted to rape her Thursday night.
Cmdr. Brian Benton said the incident occurred shortly before 9 p.m. in the 1300 block of Cumberland Drive when the 27-year-old victim’s husband and son left the house for a few minutes to return rented videos.
“A minute after they left, the alarm went off and she thought her husband had forgotten something and come back. Instead, she looked down from the landing to see a man holding a steak knife and coming up to her,” Benton said.
Benton said Kenneth R. Williams, 33, held the blade to the woman’s throat and pushed her down before attempting to sexually assault her.
“She screamed, she said ‘No’, she called for help, she said she was pregnant. Anything she could say to get him off her,” Benton said.
Williams reportedly changed his mind and left, but the woman immediately called 911 and said she had seen him before at a house down the block.
The victim identified Williams from a photo lineup, Benton said.
When Williams was 26-years-old he sexually abused a 13-year-old girl in Kane County, according to state police records. He has also been named as a suspect in a sexual assault that occurred earlier this year in Joliet.
Williams, of 2201 Spaulding in Dixmoor, was booked into the county jail shortly after 3 a.m. Friday on charges of home invasion and aggravated criminal sexual assault.
