Police Blotter: Joliet man booked for firing shots at vehicle

Updated: November 24, 2012 6:15AM

LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP — A man reportedly shot at a car occupied by two women and their small children Sunday night.

Will County Sheriff’s police were called around 6:45 p.m. to Oak Avenue and Green Garden Place where the occupants of a 2003 Grand Am said a man in a Hyundai SUV had shot at them.

“The car was driven by a 22-year-old woman who was carrying her 2-year-old son, her 26-year-old friend and her friend’s infant child,” spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said.

The women told investigators they had been driving westbound on Princeton Avenue when Delevante D. Hunter, 23, drove by in the opposite direction before making a U-turn and firing three rounds at the Grand Am. The window of a Jeep Wrangler parked nearby was shot out.

Hoffmeyer said the victims are acquainted with Hunter through mutual ex-boyfriends and girlfriends and deputies went to his residence at 1211 California Ave. in Joliet.

“When they arrived Joliet police were already on the scene,” she said.

Joliet Cmdr. Brian Benton said police had responded to a call of gunfire coming from between the 1200 blocks of California and Luther avenues and found eight shell casings in the alley. Hunter was also at the scene and was taken into custody by sheriff’s police.

He was booked into the county jail on charges of aggravated battery, aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon.

Benton said it was not known if either incident was related to shootings overheard by officers a half-hour earlier.

“Around 6:15 officers working near the 800 block of Robin Lane heard three or four shots and found a parked vehicle had been damaged, while they were checking the area they heard another shot from Rosalind Street but did not encounter any suspects,” Benton said.

Man charged with
criminal sexual assault

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP —A 21-year-old man was arrested Thursday after he allegedly admitted sexually assaulting a teenager last year.

Will County Sheriff’s police said in November 2011 a social worker at the then-15-year-old victim’s high school noticed injuries and asked how they occurred.

The girl reportedly said she had gone with acquaintances of Dustin M. Upchurch to visit his home at 2429 Pecan St. a few days earlier and he had raped her.

The lengthy investigation required DNA testing and detectives learned of another minor Upchurch sexually assaulted, but the now-18-year-old woman did not want authorities to pursue the case, according to reports.

After “biological evidence” was processed, Upchurch was questioned and reportedly admitted his involvement. He was booked into the county jail on a charge of criminal sexual assault carrying a $100,000 bond.
