De Groot is a 5-foot-9 senior outside hitter who finished the season with 161 kills and 277 digs. She also is a forward on the basketball team, and is undecided on where she will go to school.
Volleyball or basketball? Which one is your favorite?
I like both for very different reasons, and that’s why I kept playing. With volleyball, I love the energy and the momentum. With basketball, it’s super-aggressive, and I love the hustle.
Do you have a favorite moment from volleyball season?
Winning the McAuley Preview was phenomenal. That was a huge tournament for us and it was great to win it. It was so full of energy, and we worked hard to get it.
Is it difficult transitioning so quickly between sports?
It’s tough getting back into the swing of things. I was surprised how winded I was (at basketball). It’s fun to switch gears, but it’s more mental than physical.
What is your favorite holiday?
Christmas, probably. I love it. I just love the whole season. The presents are glamorous, but mostly I love it because it’s Jesus’ birthday.
What has to be on the table for Thanksgiving dinner?
My grandma’s mashed potatoes.
What’s your favorite sports movie?
Oh, that’s a tough one. “The Blind Side”. That’s perfect.
Who is your celebrity prom date?
I don’t know. Channing Tatum. That’s a solid pick.
What will you remember most about Lincoln-Way East?
Just the environment. There’s such pride in being a Griffin. There’s a ton of support, not just with football, but with volleyball and other sports, and we embrace who we are as a school.
