Tony Contos will leave his post as executive director of the Joliet Area Historical Museum.
The museum board made the announcement and said it has established a search and selection committee to fill the position. Contos has agreed to remain on duty during the selection process.
The request for departure was made by Contos, the board said, as he explores other positions that will allow him to achieve personal goals, as well as to allow time to accommodate personal family responsibilities.
“Tony Contos has had a lasting impact in making the museum a key institution that captures Joliet’s heritage. The museum is a better place because of Tony’s efforts,” Joliet Mayor Tom Giarrante said.
“Tony has guided the museum through some challenging times and has established the museum as another key destination in downtown Joliet,” Joliet City Manager Tom Thanas said.
Board President Ray Slattery said museum attendance increased significantly under Contos’ leadership and that the museum had garnered numerous awards.
Contos has served as executive director since November 2007.
