Noise wall planned for section of I-55

Updated: January 8, 2013 6:24AM

JOLIET — The Wooded Creek subdivision could be getting an Interstate 55 noise wall.

The Joliet City Council this week gave its approval for a wall that would muffle highway noise at the subdivision south of Black Road. The state would fund the wall but requires approval from Joliet.

“All this is contingent upon a study being done to ensure that the wall serves as a sound barrier,” City Manager Thomas Thanas told the council Monday before they gave approval.

The state designs interstate construction projects to include noise walls when needed. But the stretch of interstate between Route 52 and Black Road, where Wooded Creek is located, did not get a noise wall in the last construction project because it would have blocked exposure for business that line the frontage road.

Thanas told the council this week that the wall now being planned would go behind the businesses and in front of Wooded Creek at a berm.
