A roll call at Shorewood’s village board meetings will never be the same.
For the last 23 years, the late Village Clerk Julia Russell was responsible for calling the roll and keeping record of the board’s proceedings.
Russell, who died Nov. 22 at 76, was remembered and honored last week with the passage of a resolution commemorating her contributions to the village.
Russell served Shorewood’s citizens with “honesty, dedication, steadfastness and personal sacrifice, and donated her time freely in making Shorewood a more desirable place to live,” Mayor Richard Chapman read.
Russell was elected as village clerk in 1989 and served until her death. She also was a village employee for a six-year period prior to her role as clerk.
“She was a friendly, dependable and knowledgeable employee,” Chapman said. “She left behind a legacy of personal faith and dedication, not only to her family and friends, but to the village of Shorewood as a whole.”
Russell, who was proceeded in death by her husband, Harvey, is survived by a son, Chip Russell, his wife, and five grandchildren.
Chip Russell was in attendance at the meeting and requested that Deputy Clerk Toni Dulny take a roll call vote on the resolution instead of the traditional call for consensus.
“I appreciated the roll call and she would have, too,” he said.
