What: Computer recycling event to benefit Christ’s Academy of Shorewood.
When: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Where: Channahon Computer Repair, 24954 S. Tryon St., Channahon.
Why: Any unwanted computer equipment may be donated. CCR will use the parts to build computers for the school.
What will be accepted: All desktop and laptop computers, monitors, keyboards, mice,
printers and other computer equipment.

Computer repair business owner Christopher Baran was taken aback when attending a charity event at the Christian K-12 Shorewood school, Christ’s Academy, recently.
Its computers were pretty out of date, he could see, and there weren’t enough for the number of students.
“They showed me what they were working with,” Baran said, “and it was nowhere near what they should have, and not everything worked. A lot of their computers were several generations outdated.”
Baran, of all people, understands the importance of technology in today’s world. To make sure the students at Christ’s Academy were getting a “fair shake” at learning the technology they would need after graduation, he decided to give them a hand.
Computers and accessories that are donated to his business, Channahon Computer Repair, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 12 will be refurbished and scavenged to rebuild up-to-date computers that will be donated to the school. No computer is too old, he said.
“Even some of the older computers have some parts that can be used in newer computers,” he said.
Accepted will be desktops and laptops, monitors, keyboards, mice and printers, as well as other accessories. What cannot be used will be recycled in a commercial e-waste facility.
All hard drives, whether they are used or sent to recycling, will be scrubbed of all personal data to U.S. Department of Defense standards, Baran assured.
Whether it’s to clear up more space in a room, to “go green” by recycling or to help young students achieve technology literacy, Baran encourages donations. He’s hoping for enough parts to build at least 15 computers.
