Joliet adds online enrollment for electric aggregation

JOLIET — Joliet has added an online option for those who want to “opt-in” for the city’s electric aggregation program.
Residents and small businesses have until Jan. 15 to sign up for the buying program in which Joliet joins 21 other municipalities getting electricity at 33 percent less than what ComEd is now charging.
The city recently sent letters to residents and qualifying businesses advising them of the program. But enrollment previously was required by mail or phone.
On Wednesday, the city announced that people can enroll online at www.fes.com/joliet.
The “opt-in” program gets its name because Joliet residents and businesses must sign up if they want to participate. Voters last year turned down a referendum that would have automatically put them in the program unless they opted out by sending the city notice.
Joliet is joining the buying group formed by the Will County Governmental League, which is turning to FirstEnergySolutions as the electricity provider. Customers will continue to get bills and repair services from ComEd.
The discount only applies to the actual electricity supply portion of a bill.
Interested customers can continue to respond by mail using the form sent by the city. Or, they can call 1-877-635-0494.
City Manager Thomas Thanas said that anyone who has not received the city letter can call city hall, and they will be provided with the information for the opt-in program.
