HazMat team responds to apparent suicide in Bolingbrook parking lot

Updated: February 11, 2013 7:24AM

A hazardous materials team was called to a grocery store parking lot Tuesday night in Bolingbrook after a Naperville man was found dead in a car.

Police Lt. Mike Rompa said Naperville police asked Bolingbrook officers to search at Jewel, 1200 W. Boughton Road, for a despondent subject.

At 8:35 p.m. police found Leonard A. Ostrowsky, 43, dead in his car with a “suspicious” metal object inside.

The parking lot was closed off while a fire department HazMat team examined the object, which turned out to be a helium tank.

At 10:55 p.m. Ostrowsky was removed from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Rompa said his death appears to be a suicide.

The Will County coroner’s office conducted an autopsy Wednesday.

Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said toxicology results will be required before he decides on the manner of Ostrowsky’s death, but it appears to be the result of inhaling the helium in the enclosed space of the car, a black 2010 BMW
