JOLIET — Fire caused major damage to an unoccupied duplex unit early Thursday.
Battalion Chief Jeff Carey said it was 4:10 a.m. when crews arrived to find flames coming through the roof of 3424 Lake Shore Drive.
Firefighters spent two hours battling the blaze, which caused $80,000 in damage to the duplex and smoke and water damage to the unit next door.
The fire appears to have started in the basement, according to reports. Investigators were at the scene Thursday morning working to determine the cause of the fire.
