Man accused of setting fire in senior facility

Updated: March 13, 2013 6:23AM

Police say a 67-year-old man started a fire Sunday night at his father’s senior housing facility in Joliet.

Detective Patrick Schumacher said Lloyd M. Flatt Jr. had been staying with his 89-year-old father at Marycrest Village, 2115 Marmion Ave., but was upset after being kicked out.

“Around 9:45 p.m. he set an AARP magazine on fire on a chair in the laundry room and left,” Schumacher said.

After alarms went off, the damage was contained to the laundry room and no one was injured, according to reports.

Staff members reportedly told police there have been ongoing issues with Flatt, who was found by Schumacher and Detective Jim Voudrie on Monday morning near the McDonalds on Cass Street.

“He admitted to lighting the magazine on fire but said he didn’t want to hurt anyone,” Schumacher said.

Flatt was charged with aggravated attempted arson and booked into the county jail. He was previously arrested on forgery charges in 2008.
