Opponents of an immigrant detention center in Joliet plan a March 8 fundraiser to support their efforts.
The event will be 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Azteca De Oro banquet facility, 1013 Collins St., Joliet.
The city of Joliet and Corrections Corp. of America have explored the possibility of locating a privately operated immigrant detention center in Joliet. No specific proposal is pending before city officials. But the U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement is considering options for such a prison in the Chicago metropolitan area, including possible locations in other communities.
The fundraiser is being held by Concerned Citizens of Joliet, a group that has been organizing community opposition to an immigrant detention center in the city.
The event will help raise money to pay for signs that have been distributed around the community and to fund future events, including a candidates’ night and voter turnout efforts, said Charlotte Droogan, a member of Concerned Citizens of Joliet.
The fundraiser will include music and food. Cost is $5 for individuals and $15 for families. For more information, call 815-722-1222.
