I-55 reopened after semi-truck collided with two vehicles near Plainfield

The Stevenson Expressway was reopened to traffic early Wednesday, several hours after a semi-truck struck two other vehicles near Plainfield.
A 26-year-old man who was critically injured in the crash was airlifted to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove for treatment, state police said.
State police say travel in both directions was halted shortly about 1:32 a.m. when a semi-truck plowed into two stopped vehicles near mile marker 260, just outside of Plainfield.
The chain of events leading to the crash was put in motion when the 26-year-old injured man struck a barrier wall with a vehicle he was driving, state police said. A little while later a second motorist stopped to offer assistance, but before both vehicles could be moved from the roadway, the semi-truck drove through, striking both, state police said.
Travel on the interstate was closed in both directions so that the injured man could be airlifted from the scene of the accident, in the expressway’s southbound lanes.
By about 3 a.m. both directions were open to travel again, state police said.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
