JOLIET - A retired local newspaperman was arrested Thursday following a child porn investigation.
U.S. Attorney spokesman Randall Samborn confirmed John Gabriel, 77, was arrested by federal officers. Samborn expected to release additional information about the charges Gabriel faces later Thursday.
Gabriel’s arrest comes nearly a year after Joliet police arrested his live-in-girlfriend Margarita Hernandez, 32, for allegedly having sex with a teenage boy.
Joliet police said in October 2012 Hernandez was arrested as the result of “an ongoing federal investigation into the production of child pornography.”
Hernandez, who was serving as a Troy Township Democratic commiteewoman, reportedly had oral sex and sexual intercourse in July 2012 with a then-15-year-old boy at 6901 Monmouth Drive.
After Hernandez was arrested, the FBI and Chicago police used a search warrant to seize evidence from the home, where Gabriel also lives.
Until retiring in 2009, Gabriel was executive editor, publisher and staff reporter of The Weekly Reporter, a free newspaper published in Lockport.
