WEST CHICAGO — Police have found the decomposed body of an elderly man last seen in Yorkville who went missing from his northwest suburban home last month.
Eugene Jonsson, 84, of Arlington Heights, was found dead Thursday at 4:49 p.m. in his gray 2004 Buick LeSabre when a landscaper noticed the car in a heavily wooded ravine near Route 59 and Hawthorne Lane in West Chicago, according to Arlington Heights police.
Jonsson was first reported missing on Aug. 23.
He was last seen at a Speedway gas station when he asked a Yorkville police officer for directions to Ogden Avenue and Route 59 in Naperville.
Early reports suggested the car drove off the roadway into the ravine before striking several trees, police said.
There were no other vehicles that had been involved in the crash and the driver appeared to be the only individual in the car, West Chicago police Cmdr. Eric Shipman said.
The vehicle sustained heavy front-end damage and the driver and passenger front airbags were deployed, police said.
Police said it was unclear how long the car was in the ravine, but foul play is not suspected at this time.
The DuPage County Coroner’s office is investigating.
