JOLIET — A drunk driver was showing off when he ran over several trees during a Bears halftime food run Sunday night, police said.
Cmdr. Al Roechner said at 10:06 p.m. police went to Chicago and Wallace streets where a 2012 Ford F250 work truck had crashed.
“Three men were attempting to flee the scene. Two of them were stopped while another man ran away before being found at a gas station on Chicago Street,” Roechner said.
The man who ran to the gas station, Michael T. Ryle, 42, was identified as the driver, Roechner said.
The passengers said Ryle had given them a ride from Morris to Joliet for food. After stopping at a sandwich shop on Jefferson Street, they headed back to Interstate 80 by going south on Ottawa Street.
“Around DeKalb Street, Ryle told his passengers, ‘Watch this,’ and began plowing into the trees on the side of the road — leaving a debris field 500 feet long before the axle broke,” Roechner said.
Ryle, of 7072 Kine Road in Morris, was arrested on charges of hit-and-run, driving under the influence of alcohol, vandalism, driving on the sidewalk, failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash, improper lane usage and reckless driving.
