A developer has plans for two retail developments on Weber Road in Romeoville.
North Rock Real Estate is proposing a TJ Maxx store within the Shops of Romeoville center at 375 Weber Road, near the Target store.
In addition, the developer plans a 9,100-square-foot strip mall at 237 Weber Road that will include a Sleepy’s mattress store, a Dunkin’ Donuts with a drive-through lane and a Chipotle restaurant with space for outdoor seating.
Mayor John Noak said attracting national retailers to the village is important because “they’re key to the long-term vitality of the area for economic development.”
The village is also planning a feasibility study of vacant land near Illinois 53 and Joliet Road for a potential special taxing district that will offer tax breaks to encourage redevelopment. Romeoville will be reimbursed for study expenses up to $17,500 from the developer, Town & Country Utilities.
The 80-acre property has been vacant for several years and has soil contamination from its use as a fill site and construction yard, according to village documents.
Village administrator Steve Gulden said the village is eyeing the property for light-industrial use. Intersection improvements such as additional stoplights would be required if the site is redeveloped, he said.
