Local government officials may not have dressed like “Big Brother” for Halloween, but residents of a few towns apparently thought some officials acted like the fictional dictator after trick or treating was postponed Thursday because of the rainy weather.
The villages of Crete, Monee, Steger and Elwood all postponed their official trick-or-treat hours until Friday, a decision that left some mothers unable to mask their disappointment knowing they would have to unmask their costumed children.
“This is the first canceling of a holiday I’ve ever heard of in my life,” said Angie Cagwin, of Elwood. “Not to mention, how do you tell kids who expect to come home from school and go trick or treating that they’re not now?
“And it’s barely raining anymore,” she said late in the afternoon. “And it’s warm. This is ridiculous. What an outrage.”
Trick or treating in Steger was moved to 3 to 7 p.m. Friday. In both Crete and Monee, it was moved to 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, although children in both towns can trick or treat until 7 p.m. if accompanied by an adult. In Elwood, trick-or-treat hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday.
Some area malls provided indoor trick or treating as an alternative Thursday.
A post on the village of Monee website read, “We understand the importance of tradition but believe that public safety, especially pertaining to the health and well-being of our children, should come first. There are a variety of organizations (the malls or churches) that may offer an indoor alternative for Thursday.”
“I just personally feel that it’s the parents’ choice whether the kids go out or not,” said Bethany Koontz Witt, of Monee.
Although Cagwin said the postponement could create issues for parents who share custody and might not have their children on Friday, her overall take on the situation might be satisfactory to many kids.
“All this really does for me,” she said, “is makes me have to do it twice now.”
