JOLIET — A 12-year-old boy clung to life Monday night after reportedly being shot by his father.
Police and paramedics were called just after 5:30 p.m. to an apartment in the 1200 block of Cutter Avenue, according to police Chief Fred Hayes.
“The 36-year-old mother told officers her husband had shot the boy,” Hayes said. Roderick D. Tademy, 36, of Joliet, was taken into custody outside the apartment and was questioned at the police station late Monday. Police expected to file charges against him.
Hayes said the woman took the gun from Tademy and turned it over to investigators.
The boy was transported to Silver Cross Hospital where he was listed in “grave condition” with a gunshot wound to the head, as of 8 p.m. Monday.
“This investigation is ongoing but it appears this shooting was intentional — not accidental,” Hayes said.
Two 6-year-old siblings were also in the apartment at the time and were reportedly with the mother at the hospital.
“They will be given victim-sensitive interviews at an appropriate time later in the investigation,” Hayes said.
Police were planning to search the apartment after a warrant was issued Monday night.
“There will be more information as this case develops,” Hayes said.
