Another Home Depot distribution center coming to Joliet

Another, larger Home Depot distribution center will join the CenterPoint Intermodal Center, bringing hundreds of jobs to Joliet by the summer of 2013.
Jeremy Grey, vice president of infrastructure and transportation for CenterPoint Properties, announced Home Depot’s plan for a 1.62 million-square-foot building at the Joliet City Council’s pre-council meeting Monday afternoon.
The center will be built on 88 acres off Centerpoint Way, near an existing Home Depot distribution facility, and would bring 500 construction jobs and 300 permanent jobs to the area, Grey said.
“It’s amazing for something this big, what a secret it was kept,” said Joliet Mayor Tom Giarrante. “I’m sure you’re going to continue to be a good neighbor.”
City council members also welcomed the development, unanimously approving the preliminary plat for phase six of the intermodal center, which would allow for the development of a total of 213.8 acres.
In January, Home Depot began operations out of a 657,000-square-foot distribution center in CenterPoint.
The facility employs 350 workers and distributes merchandise to 140 stores in Illinois and Minnesota.
That warehouse replaced the distribution center Home Depot had in Romeoville.
The first Home Depot center and a distribution center for APL, a container storage facility, were among the first projects in the Joliet park.
A trucking terminal for Dayton Freight Lines at New Lenox and Cherry Hill roads is slated to open sometime in late 2012.
CenterPoint has industrial parks built around intermodal yards in both Joliet and Elwood.
