Money magazine’s list of the 100 best places to live, which focuses on smaller cities, named Carmel, Ind., the No. 1 community.
Carmel, a suburb of Indianapolis, earned praise for its economy, affordable homes, low taxes, quality schools and bike paths.
Three Illinois cities, all in the western suburbs, and all about 30 miles from Chicago, made the list:
♦ Naperville (population 152,600) ranked No. 53. The magazine cited the city’s Centennial Beach, Riverwalk, top schools and major employers, such as OfficeMax and Alcatel-Lucent.
♦ Bolingbrook, (71,800) ranked No. 61, won kudos for its fishing lake, local theater, sports programs and farmers market.
♦ Wheaton (54,500) ranked No. 80, has Wheaton College and also band concerts, classic car shows and express trains to Chicago.
