Appliance checklist: repair vs. replace it

I am constantly dealing with things breaking in my house. Maybe it’s because there are five humans and two dogs in the house, something always seems to be broken.

I spend a lot of time questioning if it’s time to just chuck the broken item and get a new one or pay someone to fix it. Consumer Reports has helped answer some of those questions. They examined over 50,000 broken appliances to help us make our decisions.

First for the kitchen:

An older refrigerator with an ice maker is probably better to replace. Refrigerators last about 13 years on average. Newer models have much simpler ice makers that are not as prone to breaking down and are easier to repair.

Dishwashers last an average of nine years. Newer models use less water and they are much quieter.

Gas ranges last around 15 years and electric ranges last around 13 years. Garbage disposals last an average of 12 years. If you are replacing any one of your kitchen appliances, check to make sure the others are in good working condition. Replacing a few appliances at one time can help you get a package deal when shopping.

The laundry room:

Top loading washing machines last around 14 years, while front loaders last about 11.

Consumer Reports stated that the average dryer repair costs $140 while a new dryer can cost between $400 and $1,000. Dryer repairs are probably best.

If your washer breaks and it’s under 10 years old, probably best to repair it. If over 10 years old, you may want to look at not only replacing it but the dryer too since you can try to save money bundling them.

Computers:

The Consumer Reports survey found that around one in three laptops and desktops break by their fourth year.

The key to avoid laptop outages is protection. First, keep it level. Second, turn it off and allow it to rest. Last, buy a protective cover.

Lifehacker.com reported that if your laptop or desktop goes on the fritz and it’s under two years old, it’s best to repair it. The average cost of a repair is $100 to $300. When it’s between three and four years old, you want to have it assessed for what the repair might cost and decide if it’s better to just get a replacement. Over five years, just replace it. The newer model is going to do more for you, and the costs of the new computers are coming down too.

Shopper’s tip: Maintenance is key in keeping your appliances and electronics in working order. Do routine cleaning and service checks so you don’t have to replace as often.
