Reading programs available

JOLIET — Northern Illinois University Outreach Services will offer eight different reading skills programs for 4-year-olds through adults.

Tuition and materials fees vary by program level.

Programs begin June 11 at the University of St. Francis.

The programs are taught by instructors from the Institute of Reading Development.

For information or to register, call 888-201-2448 from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays; 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays; and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.

Lewis honored for community work

ROMEOVILLE — Lewis University has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service and the U.S. Department of Education.

Lewis is included among the nation’s leading colleges and universities, with its students and faculty and staff members, for its commitment to bettering communities through community service and service learning.

“Being named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll recognizes Lewis University’s commitment to the community through volunteer service, educational and community-based programs, and service learning,” said Brother James Gaffney, president of Lewis.

Lewis students engaged in more than 10,000 community service hours with more than 100 community partners in 2011.

Lewis offering language program

ROMEOVILLE — Lewis University will offer 11th- and 12th-grade high school students and incoming Lewis freshman, sophomores and juniors the opportunity to participate in STARTALK, a free four-week foreign language program.

The program will run June 18 to July 14 at the university’s main campus.

No previous language skills are necessary, but admission to the program is competitive.

The application deadline is June 4. Visit www.lewisu.edu/startalk to obtain an application.

Those accepted into the program will have the opportunity to choose Russian, Chinese, Arabic or Turkish as their desired language.
