Highland 4-H winners

MORRIS — A team consisting of Mackenzie Granby, Austin Granby and Brandon Pasdertz, all members of the Highland Ag 4-H Club, won the 4-H Meats contest in the 2012 Illinois State FFA at the University of Illinois.

The three team members also individually placed first, second, and third, respectively. Team members evaluate beef, pork, and lamb carcasses, wholesale and retail meat cuts, and grade meat for quality and yield.

Participants are also required to identify 30 retail cuts of meat out of more than 125 different cuts. In addition to this, they must complete a ground meat formulation problem as a team.

The team will represent Illinois at the National Meats Judging Contest on Oct. 23 at Kansas State University as part of the American Royal Stock Show.

Camp Clover

MORRIS —Camp Clover is an exciting, hands-on learning summer camp for youth ages 7 to 14.

Youth will learn more about their community and world; conduct fun science experiments and experience a food and nutrition curriculum by eating the snacks that they prepare!

Camp Clover is scheduled for: 9 a.m. to noon June 11-14 at the Grundy County Fairgrounds, 8890 N. Route 47.

Cost is $15. Pre-registration is required.

Teen and adult volunteers are also needed. To pre-register or volunteer, contact John Davis at the Extension Office at 815-942-2725.
