It is the oldest Greek-lettered organization established by African-American college-educated women.

Since its 1975, chartering as a local chapter in the Joliet/Will County area, Kappa Mu Omega has provided annual scholarships totaling more than $100,000 to academically talented high school seniors. Funding is provided primarily through its major fundraiser, Fantasia Ball.

At this year’s Scholarship Tea, keynote addresses were given by Thelma Kirkland with a message from 2010 scholarship recipient Kiannna Kirkland, a sophomore at Augustana College, and 2009 scholarship recipient Justin Clarke, a junior at Northwestern College.

This year, the Joliet chapter developed a partnership with Provena St. Joseph Medical Center and continues partnerships with the Silver Cross Healthy Community Commission and Joliet Technologies.
