EFT to stop smoking: From 6:30-9 p.m. May 23, Challenge Fitness, 2021 S. Lawrence Ave., Lockport, is offering the EFT to Stop Smoking program for people ages 16 years and older. Students are taught the self-applied acupressure technique that assists in eliminating the emotional components of addictive habits. The fee is $35 for residents or $40 for non-residents. Free back pain talk and spine consultations: 6 p.m. May 24, Provena St. Joseph Medical Center Madison Medical Plaza (third floor), 301 N. Madison St., Joliet. Prepared childbirth class: 6:30-9 p.m. May 24 at Silver Cross Hospital, Pavilion A, Conference Center Room 2AB, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. Participants will receive instruction from a registered nurse on breathing, relaxation and floor exercise techniques. She will also review the labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum process. Skin cancer screenings: From 5-6:30 p.m. May 24 and 9-10:10 a.m. May 25, in recognition of National Skin Cancer Awareness month, Silver Cross will offer free full-body skin cancer screenings Thursday with Dr. Aaron Cetner, a dermatologist, and Friday with Dr. Gregory Bezanis, a dermatologist, at the Silver Cross Center for Women’s Health, 1870 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. Free blood pressure checks: 9-10 a.m. May 25, Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center’s West Tower Lobby (outside Jazzman’s Cafe). This free service allows you to keep up with your health and monitor your blood pressure. It is sponsored by the Senior Spirit Department of Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center. Colleen Kapsch blood drive: Colleen McEvilly-Kapsch was diagnosed with leukemia in November and has received more than 65 blood transfusions. From 7:30 a.m. to noon June 2, donate blood and help Kapsch and other residents like her who need life-saving blood transfusions. The blood drive is sponsored by The Our Lady of Knock Council #12882 Minooka Knights of Columbus and will be held at Minooka Junior High School, 333 McEvilly Road, Minooka. Enter through the east-side doors. Technicians from Heartland Blood Center will take donations. All in the community are invited to donate. Christopher Joyce and Brian Lahmann, experienced gastric bypass surgeons with bariatric and minimally invasive surgery at Silver Cross Hospital, for a free informational session The program is held at 5:45 p.m. every Wednesday in the Specialty Care Pavilion on the Silver Cross Hospital Campus, 1300 Copperfield Ave., Joliet. Participants will learn about the advantages and risks of traditional and laparoscopic bariatric weight loss surgery, find out who is a candidate for the procedure and hear from area patients about their experiences. Calcium artery scoring: Silver Cross Hospital offers a quick and painless test using a high-speed CT scanner that can measure calcium deposits in the coronary arteries to determine a person’s risk of having a heart attack. Calcium artery scoring is ideal for men 45 and older and women 55 and older who smoke, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol or a family history of premature coronary artery disease.
