Memories in the sky: At 1 p.m. Oct. 13, Joliet Area Community Hospice will hold its inaugural balloon launch to celebrate and remember loved ones who have gone before us at Joilet Area Community Hospice, 250 Water Stone Circle in Joliet. This event is free; balloons will be provided. Memory cards will be available to write your favorite memories of your loved one, a message about how much they are loved and missed or simply sign thier name on the memory card.
Oktoberfest: 3 to 10 p.m. Oct. 13, hosted by St. Joseph Academy at St. Joe’s Park, Theodore and Raynor avenues in Joliet. Featuring dinner, a bar, bingo, live music, free door prizes, raffles, homade bakery items and more. Dinner will include brats, German-style potato salad, coleslaw and coffee. Cost is $10 for adult, $8 for seniors and $5 for the children’s menu of hot dogs, chips and juice boxes. There will be a free door prize drawing every hour. Call 815-723-4567.
Pancake breakfast: 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 14, sponsored by the Mokena Fire Protection District at Fire Station No. 1, 19853 S. Wolf Road in Mokena. All you-can-eat pancakes, sausage, orange juice, coffee and milk. Cost $5 or $3 fir kids ages 4-12. Free for kids 3 and younger. There will be demonstrations and door prizes, the donations for the Frankfort Township Food Pantry will be accepted. The pantry is in need of pasta sauces, laundry detergent, face tissues, paper products, condiments, spices and salad dressings.

Fundraiser: From 6-11 p.m. Oct. 14, a fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy counties will be held at American Legion Harwood Post, 705 S. Larkin Ave., Joliet. The theme is based on Denise Baran-Unland’s young adult vampire book, “Byrony,” which is scheduled for release later this year. Appetizers will be served based on recipes from the cookbook, “Memories in the Kitchen: Bites and Nibbles from ‘Byrony.’ All cookbook profits will be donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy counties. Performing will be Joliet-area teen classic rock band, Street Worthy and James Onohan, composer and pianist for the upcoming Byrony CD, “The Best-Loved Compositions of John Simons.” The fundraiser includes a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle, Byrony-related product and characteres from the novel interacting with the crowd.
