Gold shines like the sun. Diamonds and jewels sparkle like stars. You’d think it would be difficult to lose such flashy merchandise. Not so. Next to keys, I’ve learned that jewelry is the most frequently misplaced treasure. And the past month might well set a record.
On Jan. 3, I shared the story of Virginia Meyer of Mokena who lost her wedding ring right before Christmas. Her son, Thomas Meyer, who had originally reported the ring AWOL, contacted me last week with good news.
“I just got off the phone with my mother and she found her wedding ring in the house,” he said. She must have been folding towels and putting them away the day she lost her ring.”
You guessed it, readers, the ring was right there in the linen closet just waiting to be found.
Easy chair blues
Judy Erwin of Plainfield also shared the story of an AWOL ring.
“Over a year ago, my husband had swollen hands and had transferred his wedding band to his pinkie finger. (I told him not to do that, but he is a guy!),” she wrote. “That afternoon he discovered he no longer had the ring.”
So, the Erwins trekked all over “God’s green acre” — backtracking and throwing themselves at the mercy of apathetic store clerks. When that didn’t work, they tore the house and garage apart — all to no avail. They finally gave up on ever finding the ring.
Fast forward to about a month ago when the Erwins were cleaning up an easy chair to give to a neighbor.
“I cleaned it thoroughly. After removing lost peanuts and crusty cheese puffs,” Erwin said. “I felt something hard in the underlining of the chair.”
And that something hard turned out to be her husband’s ring.
A sparkling bracelet
One of my first visitors at our new digs at 2175 Oneida St. was Barb Miller of Minooka, who dropped off a lovely silver bracelet she found right before Christmas outside of the Jewel/Osco in Shorewood.
“I went into the store and asked the four or five people that I saw go in before me if they lost a bracelet,” she said. “Each one said no.”
Miller brought the bracelet to me. It’s approximately 7.5 inches long. It appears to be silver, but probably isn’t since there are no markings. It has three beads with green, amber and purple stones.
If it belongs to you, give me a call.
Lose an engagement ring?
Liz Collins of Plainfield found a very precious bauble at Home Depot in Joliet. A sparkling something or another caught her eye. Imagine her surprise to find a “serious engagement ring” in a small plastic pouch.
If you’ve lost a precious ring, give me a call and describe it and I’ll put you in touch with Collins.
Green eyeglasses found
Marie Manzi of Lockport was out walking her dog, when she happened on a pair of eyeglasses on Stephanie Drive. The glasses have a lime green wire frame. Call me if they belong to you.
Dodge truck keys lost
A fellow named Dwight from Elwood lost his keys near the first of the year. The keys are on a standard key ring and have a Dodge truck key and remote, another vehicle key and a couple of other miscellaneous keys on the ring.
