YORKVILLE — The Kendall County Board has approved a settlement of more than $8,000 with a former Sheriff’s Department clerk who alleged racial discrimination.
The board agreed to pay $8,475 to Taffarra Thomas, who had filed a discrimination charge with the U.S. Equal Opportunity Commission and the Illinois Department of Human Rights.
Thomas claimed there was discrimination and retaliation in connection with her being denied family medical leave for what Thomas said was a serious health condition regarding her daughter.
In return for the money, Thomas agrees to drop her claim and any claims or grievances in the future, said State’s Attorney Eric Weis.
The county also agrees to reflect her leaving employment on April 28, 2011, as a resignation rather than a firing. She will get a neutral letter of recommendation from the Sheriff’s Department.
The settlement removes disciplinary letters from her file showing a one-day suspension, a seven-day suspension and a 10-day suspension, Weis said.
