The White Oak Library District on Saturday will auction surplus items from the Lockport and Romeoville branches — as both buildings are undergoing extensive renovation.
An auction preview will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Lockport library, 121 E. Eighth St. The actual auction begins at 10:30 a.m.
Customers who buy items in the auction will have until Monday to remove their purchases.
“The district has put into immediate use and/or storage all of the surplus items that we feel we may need in the future. What is left must be auctioned off and removed from library premises so that our renovation projects can proceed,” the library district said in a statement.
With the Lockport renovation, the district has moved library operations to the nearby Gaylord Building, 200 W. Eighth St. The library’s normal hours will continue at the temporary location: 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays.
“Over the last couple of weeks, we moved our library out of the Lockport building, and we moved into the Gaylord Building, which is a lot smaller. So there’s a lot of excess equipment sitting behind at the Lockport library,” said Scott Pointon, director of the library district.
Excess equipment will be auctioned off Saturday — along with an almost equal amount of equipment from the Romeoville library, Pointon said.
At the Romeoville branch, at 201 W. Normantown Road, renovation work began in April 2011 and is expected to last until May.
The library is serving customers in the lower level during normal hours as the second-phase renovation begins on the main level.
“The recent move of library operations from the upper level to the newly renovated lower level at the Romeoville Branch has left us with a lot of surplus furniture and equipment. These items are high quality and could be just what is needed for another organization or even local residents,” the district statement said.
