PLAINFIELD — In March, residents will be given the opportunity to vote on a referendum relating to electricity supply.
The village is pursuing electrical aggregation and Illinois law requires the village to place a referendum on the ballot to ask voters for the authority to aggregate electric accounts and seek bids for power generation.
The Plainfield Village Board approved the placement of the referendum measure.
It will appear as follows:
“Shall the village of Plainfield have the authority to arrange for the supply of electricity for its residential and small commercial retail customers who have not opted out of such a program?”
Electric aggregation is a program that allows local governments to bundle, or aggregate, residential and small commercial retail electric accounts and seek bids for a cheaper supply of power.
If the referendum proposal is approved, the village will join forces with the Will County Governmental League and other Will County municipalities to request proposals for electricity.
The village then can buy power from a source other than ComEd if a cheaper price is offered.
Even if the village’s voters pass the measure, individuals will have the opportunity to opt out of the program before it begins if they wish.
