Just seven years after the Joliet Park District was formed, Nowell Park pool was built at Mills Road and Route 52 (Manhattan Road), giving East Side residents a place to cool off in the summer. The park boasted more than the pool. There were 20 acres offering picnic space and sports fields. The park district’s board voted 3-2 to close the pool in January 2005. As part of a state-grant funded development, the pool was filled in but the bathhouse remains.
