TROY TOWNSHIP — A person is in critical condition after an alleged drunken driver’s car hit a semi Tuesday night on Interstate 55, police said.
The crash occurred on southbound I-55 just north of Route 52 around 10:25 p.m. Tuesday.
The semi-tractor was hauling two trailers.
An occupant of the car was extricated and airlifted to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where he was in critical condition Wednesday night.
The truck driver, who is not accused of wrongdoing, was injured and brought to a local hospital, police said.
On Wednesday, authorities did not release the name of the car’s driver, who was charged with drunken driving.
The crash temporarily closed I-55’s southbound lanes as firefighters and police worked the scene. Northbound traffic was routed to the shoulder.
Responding agencies included state police and the Joliet, Troy and Plainfield fire departments.
