Man accused of making fake holdup call

CREST HILL — Police say a partygoer faked a stick-up to avoid officers early Sunday.
Chief Dwayne Wilkerson said officers were on patrol shortly after midnight when they discovered several cars parked in a grassy field in the 1700 block of North Broadway and encountered someone returning to a vehicle who acknowledged a party was being held at a house on the block.
“A few minutes later, Wescom dispatch received a 911 call that the Food 4 Less was being robbed by two armed men,” Wilkerson said.
The officers rushed to 1701 N. Larkin Ave., where they confirmed the business had been closed for several hours and an employee said no one had reported a robbery but allowed them to check the building.
Wilkerson acknowledged police already had developed a theory about where the call had originated when they learned from dispatchers the phone number belonged to Eric V. Rivera, 22.
“They returned to locate the party and found Eric Rivera, who admitted to making the call because someone else promised him a ride home if he did, but they left without him,” Wilkerson said.
Rivera, of 306 Woodcreek Drive in Bolingbrook, was booked into the county jail on a charge of disorderly conduct.
