An Orland Park man who told police he was celebrating the “best week” at work is facing two felony charges following a crash that seriously injured a 60-year-old Mokena man.
Joseph Maas, 45, 15401 Treetop Drive, Orland Park, was charged with two counts of aggravated drunken driving, improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident following the March 31 crash on 191st Street.
According to witnesses, Maas drifted across the median into the eastbound lanes of 191st Street shortly after 3 p.m., turned sharply and crashed into a car driven by Michael Stroh. Both drivers had to be extricated from their cars.
Stroh suffered several broken ribs, a collapsed lung, bruising and facial lacerations immediately following the crash, family members told police. A few days later, it was discovered the crash caused heart contusions, and Stroh was transferred to the intensive care unit at Silver Cross Hospital. Maas was treated for minor injuries.
Maas told police he had been celebrating his work week by drinking shots of alcohol before the crash. He turned himself in to police on April 4 after the two felony charges were approved. He was released on bond the same day.
