Joliet to celebrate Arbor Day

JOLIET — Friday has been proclaimed Arbor Day in Joliet with an official celebration taking place at 2 p.m. Thursday at River View School, 2097 Bronk Road.

Third-graders will participate in a tree planting ceremony. A representative from Chicagoland Speedway will donate two ginkgo trees for the celebration as part of NASCAR’s Green Clean Air Initiative. ComEd will also donate three hawthorns.

Winners of the Arbor Day Poster Contest are: first, Kaylie Roman; second, Gabriel Carrero; third, Todd Burisek; and honorable mentions Michael Acosta, Starr Jackson and Zena Rich.

Cancer awareness night

LEMONT — The Greater Chicago Affiliate-Southwest Suburbs of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network will host an awareness night at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Lemont High School, 800 Porter St.

The play “Love Letter” will be performed by Sharon Jacobs, who lost her father and husband to the disease, to raise awareness and funds for pancreatic cancer research.

Tickets cost $10. Proceeds will be donated to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
