50 years ago, 1962

More than 300 school board members and school administrators from four counties gathered in Joliet to hear George T. Wilkins, the state superintendent of public instruction, tell of the need for a statewide educational TV system and for expanding the junior college program. Wilkins made an unscheduled appearance at Hufford Junior High School.

25 years ago, 1987

The sheriff of Will County doesn’t want county jail inmates to grow bored this summer — he wants them to grow vegetables. Sheriff John Johnsen said he has begun a pilot program to have inmates grow some of the vegetables that are used for meals in the county jail to make the jail self-sufficient in its vegetable needs and to give selected inmates a chance to leave their cells.
