NEW LENOX — A flaming truckload of candy bars closed part of Interstate 80 for hours early Tuesday.
State police Sgt. Martez Malone said that at 1:20 a.m., a westbound semi truck ignited just west of Route 30, but the driver was able to escape without injury.
New Lenox firefighters extinguished the burning vehicle, which Fire Chief Jon Mead said contained Snickers and M&M’s.
The right lanes of the interstate were blocked for several hours as debris was removed, reopening shortly before 9 a.m.

JOLIET — A man carrying a handgun robbed a payday loan store Monday afternoon.
Cmdr. Rich Demick said one employee was working at 1:15 p.m. when the bandit wearing a dark shirt and blue shorts entered Check Into Cash, 2157 W. Jefferson St.
“He pulled his shirt up over his mouth and showed he was carrying a handgun in his waistband,” Demick said. “He took money from the register and bank deposits and told the clerk she should go in the back room.”
The employee was not injured and called police when she heard the robber leave the store.
The suspect was described as a Hispanic man in his mid-30s with a black crewcut. He was 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighed 210 pounds.
