Updated: July 27, 2012 6:10AM

MANHATTAN — A Joliet Township man was killed and a woman was seriously injured in a traffic crash Sunday night.

The collision occurred around 10:40 p.m. when a northbound Ford pickup struck a southbound white van on Route 52, a half-mile south of Delaney Road.

The woman who was driving the van was airlifted from the scene while the man who’d been in the Ford was pronounced dead at 11:40 p.m. by the Will County coroner’s office.

The coroner’s office has confirmed where the man lived, but said his identity does not match the name on cards found with him. His family planned to meet with the coroner’s office Monday afternoon.

Bystanders assist cop
in fight, arrest

JOLIET — An officer fought off and arrested two attackers with some help from bystanders after responding to a domestic dispute late Saturday.

The officer responded to the call around 12 a.m. Sunday near Romayne and Capri avenues.

The officer allegedly saw Randall L. Harrison, 22, of 304 Romayne Ave., threatening someone with a bottle.

When the officer tried to arrest Harrison, Harrison began fighting with him. The officer was then attacked by a second man, Jamal M. Smith, 20, of 1317 Nelson Road in New Lenox, police said.

With the help of two bystanders, police arrested Harrison and Smith and booked them into the county jail Sunday on charges of aggravated battery and resisting a peace officer.

About 2:30 a.m., the 43-year-old victim was walking home in the 500 block of Edgebrook Drive when he was approached by a man in his 20s.

“The victim greeted the offender who (immediately) cursed at him then attacked him,” Cmdr. Eric Allen said. The victim was stabbed several times and suffered wounds to his arms, chest and back.

Nearby residents heard the struggle and the suspect, who was 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighed 180 pounds, fled south on Edgebrook Drive and east on Ridge Road.

The victim was taken to Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet where he was listed in stable condition.
