Plainfield man helps rescue swimmer in Michigan

Updated: July 27, 2012 6:18AM

SILVER CREEK TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Authorities are crediting the quick actions of two people in southwestern Michigan, including a Plainfield man, for saving the life of a 66-year-old woman who became disoriented while swimming.

The Cass County sheriff’s department said Kathleen Baliunas of Dowagiac was swimming at Magician Lake in Silver Creek Township on Sunday when she began to struggle and disappeared beneath the water. The department said Juan Bethancourt of Plainfield jumped in after her from a passing boat.

After Bethancourt pulled Baliunas onto a dock, 58-year-old registered nurse Shelly Hennen began CPR. The department said Baliunas was revived by the time deputies arrived.

Baliunas was taken to an area hospital. The department said Monday she was listed in stable condition.
