WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP — Police say a Chicago man chose an extremely dangerous way to celebrate getting the kids in the car Saturday.
Just before 11 p.m., Will County Sheriff’s deputies were sent to the 29300 block of South Stoney Island Avenue after neighbors complained about loud music coming from a party. Deputies reportedly found about 40 vehicles parked nearby and 175 people in a back yard with a band playing in a barn.
While a deputy was reportedly standing 30 yards away from a white GMC Yukon, a woman put an 8-year-old girl, 3-year-old girl and 1-year-old girl in the backseat, while Efrain Barajas, 32, put a stroller in the open back window.
(Barajas) then pointed a firearm in the air and discharged it six times,” the deputy reported.
The deputy reportedly drew his own gun and forced Barajas to toss the weapon and lay on the ground until another officer arrived to handcuff him.
Police reportedly found a Colt .38-caliber semi-automatic pistol and shell casings on the ground nearby. Barajas had “a strong odor of alcohol” on his breath, police said.
The children and vehicle were turned over to Barajas’ wife and the Department of Children and Family Services was notified. Barajas, of 9747 S. Avenue H, was booked into the county jail on charges of reckless discharge of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon and unauthorized possession of a firearm.
